THE PROBLEM

Cut & Paste is a collective of art, design, photography, and culture with the goal to create a sense of community among emerging creative talent. Creativity relies on collaboration, inspiration, and innovation, all of which, are cornerstone values of this publication. Each project or feature is adorned with ways to connect with the artist, view their portfolios, and reach out to simply say, “hey”. Often times, those around you have the ability to invigorate your own creative process, and you never know what talent might be thriving right around the corner.

I decided to create, curate, design, and produce my own magazine showcasing creativity and emerging talent across a variety of disciplines: art, design, photography, and culture.

THE INSPIRATION

The publication is inspired by zine culture and collaborative, composited design. To bring the zine revolution into a modern context, I wanted to combine the style with the visual aesthetic of a modern independent publication.

THE PROCESS

In creating an identity for a zine inspired publication, my first instinct was to have a handcrafted DIY look, which soon evolved into a sophisticated lifestyle magazine approach. In order to accurately reflect the target audience, a cleaner, artistic approach was selected.

THE DESIGNS

In addition to the magazine itself, deliverables include a marketing campaign of four posters, promotional poster, mailing postcard, stickers, website, social media presence, and a documentary interview video.

REFLECTION

As one of the most ambitious projects of my design career, this project was an eye-opening experience. The tangible aspect of design is something I really admire and revolve around, so actually producing a sizable magazine myself and being able to hold it in my hands is the pinnacle of this experience. I learned a lot along the way about working and dealing with other creatives as well, trying to foster a sense of community and collaboration. I was able to visit every aspect that I’m capable of within design with this project, so I feel it showcases what I’m capable of as a designer.
